A few weeks ago, I delivered the closing keynote at UCF’s Teaching and Learning Conference. My thanks to Kevin Yee and Wendy Howard for the opportunity to reflect on the affordances and constraints of generative AI, the emergence of superintelligence, and the evolution of literacy—from secondary orality to human–AI-assisted authorship, and eventually, to post-human authorship. Ultimately, I argued we must reconsider student writing as a reliable proxy for assessing learning, writing competence, and cognitive development.
